Fianna Fáil Environment Spokesperson Niall Collins has expressed his disappointment at the report from the Constituency Commission, saying the Government has missed an opportunity for real and radical political reform.
Deputy Collins commented, “Fine Gael and Labour talked about real change before coming into power, but all we are seeing today is a tinkering at the edges. Reducing the number of TDs by 8 is not real political reform.
“Fianna Fáil went to the electorate last year with a radical reform programme. We have been clear that the number of TDs must be kept under review, but that reform of politics needs to go much deeper. Fianna Fáil proposed that Parliament and Government should be separate, that the Oireachtas should have a much more powerful oversight role and that Government should be open to outside experts.
“The political system as it is has not delivered. Simply cutting a few TDs doesn’t change a single thing.
“This report isn’t of much interest to people outside Leinster House. The people who elected us don’t want us naval gazing over the next election – they want us focused on the real issues facing the country today. Fianna Fáil will study this report in detail and will continue to push for real reform of the political system.”
