Fianna Fáil TD for Donegal Charlie McConalogue says the Minister for Health must introduce the replacement for the Mobility Allowance/Motorised Transport scheme immediately.  It’s 4 years since those programmes were scrapped and there has been no provision for people with disabilities to apply for a support scheme.

Deputy McConalogue commented, “My office is in constant contact with people who are frustrated and disheartened as a result of the Government’s failure to replace these importance schemes.  While people who were in receipt of the Mobility Allowance before the scheme was closed still receive payments, there is no support for applicants post 2013.

“I welcome a statement from Minister Finian McGrath that policy proposals for a new Transport Support Scheme are “at an advanced stage” however, it beggars belief that it has taken so long for successive Ministers for Health to reach this point.

“The previous schemes supported some of the most vulnerable people in our society and these people have essentially been left with nothing since their removal.

“I am calling on the Minister for the Health to stop re-iterating the rhetoric of his predecessors and bring the proposals for the new scheme to Government without delay”.
