Fianna Fáil Deputy Barry Cowen has expressed his dismay following the performance of Tánaiste Joan Burton in the Dáil today. The Tánaiste was responding to questions from Deputy Cowen in Dáil Éireann on the rates of violent crime in the country.
Deputy Cowen commented, “We have known for some time that this Government has quickly become insulated and isolated from the reality of life for a great many people, but listening to the Tánaiste dismiss concern about rates of violent crime in the Dáil today highlighted the extent to which she and her colleagues have become out of touch.
“Just this morning, we had a violent and tragic reminder of the damage that the scourge of crime is causing with another violent murder in Balbriggan.
“The Tánaiste’s attempt to dismiss the problem by taking refuge in commending the Gardaí is deeply disingenuous. An Garda Síochána enjoys the full and enthusiastic support of my party, but this does not take away from the fact that a growing number of people are living in fear of criminals who are increasingly brazen in their activities”.
