Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Sport, Timmy Dooley, has called on the Government to clarify its position on alcohol sponsorship of sporting organisations and sporting events.
Deputy Dooley was reacting to reports that Junior Minister Alex White will bring proposals to the cabinet this month calling for the elimination of sponsorship by alcohol companies of sporting events and organisations.
“The proposals on banning alcohol sponsorship of sporting events and organisations due to be brought before cabinet by Minister Alex White seems to contradict previous comments from Minister Leo Varadkar, who expressed concern about such a ban, saying it would put Irish sporting teams at a disadvantage,” said Deputy Dooley.
“Sporting organisations have expressed huge concern with these proposed measures, they felt they had the support of the Government when Minister Varadkar made these comments last year.
“The conflicting stories from Labour and Fine Gael has created a lot of unease and confusion. We need to see a clear statement from the Government about what their position is on this. We can’t have a Minister going on a solo run here when what we need a coherent position so sporting organisations know where they stand.”
