Government needs to immediately increase rent supplements – Fitzpatrick
Fianna Fáil candidate for Dublin Central Mary Fitzpatrick is calling on the government to immediately increase rent supplements as the latest figures show that the number of homeless families in Dublin trebled in January 2016.
“This is a very serious issue and it is alarming that the number of families presenting as homeless has trebled in January alone. According to the Peter McVerry Trust the number of homeless families they are working with rose from 41 in December to 125 in January which is an alarming jump.”
The latest figures from the Dublin Homeless Executive show that 125 new families became homeless in Dublin in January 2016.
Ms Fitzpatrick agreed with a call from the Executive which pointed out that rent supplement rates must be raised with immediate effect. “Every effort must be made to prevent homelessness and to help families in dire circumstances,” urged the Dublin Central candidate.
The report from the Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) says that the three main causes of families becoming homeless are eviction from private rental accommodation, overcrowding and relationships breaking down.
“These statistics show the urgent need for measures such as an increase in the rent supplement allowance and a plan for new social housing. The issue of homelessness will have to be a priority for the next government,” added Ms Fitzpatrick.
