Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North West Michael Moynihan has called on the Agriculture Minister to reopen the GLAS scheme to farmer’s whose AEOS contracts finished in 2018.
Deputy Moynihan commented, “Now that the Agri-Environmental Options Scheme has finished GLAS is the only green scheme currently operating. The fact that some farmers who took part in AEOS but cannot now apply for GLAS is nonsensical – surely all efforts should be made to encourage farmers to participate in more environmentally friendly practices.
“There are dozens of farmers across Cork who signed up for AEOS but are being refused entry to GLAS. I believe that all efforts should be made to accommodate farmers who want to sign up to the scheme.
“Farmers have come through a very difficult period and GLAS provides a very important funding stream while at the same time encouraging better farming practices. The Department is already running a €62m underspend in the scheme so the funding is available if needed.
“I am urging Minister Creed to reconsider his position and make provisions to allow AEOS farmers apply to GLAS”, concluded Deputy Moynihan.
