Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice Niall Collins has said the shooting dead of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe is a terrible reminder of the realities facing An Garda Síochána.
“This is a dreadful reminder that our garda force is not just another civil service section of a government department. The gardaí face very specific challenges and threats in keeping our streets safe, and they need very specific supports,” Deputy Collins said.
“Not since the shooting dead of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe in 1996 have we had such a shocking reminder of this reality. We must send out the strongest possible message to these criminal thugs that they are not untouchable.
“An attack on an on-duty garda, who is working to keep our communities safe, is direct attack on the public itself. This was an attack on the very heart of community life in Ireland. These armed thugs were targeting a much loved Irish institution and Garda Donoghue was shot down as he tried to protect it.
“There is a palpable sense of shock, anger and disgust right across the country about what happened last night. People are saying enough is enough; we will not tolerate this brazen criminality that threatens the safety of our communities and the safety of those who work to protect us.
“I wish to express my solidarity with An Garda Síochána at this extremely difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are also with Detective Garda Donohoe’s family and friends.”
