Fianna Fáil Senator Robbie Gallagher has secured a Seanad debate to discuss potential job losses at Kerry Foods in Carrickmacross. Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys will attend the Chamber to answer questions about the threatened redundancies.
Senator Gallagher explained, “The reports from the Kerry Foods factory in Carrickmacross are extremely worrying and would be a huge blow to the workers and their families. Claims that the company plans to implement compulsory redundancies is also a cause for concern and I would appeal to management and unions to engage with each other to explore what options are open to them.
“The Border region, and Monaghan in particular, is not seeing the much talked about recovery. Any further job losses in the town will exacerbate an already difficult employment situation. Carrickmacross is still reeling from the loss of 140 jobs when the Bose plant closed back in 2015.
“I have called on Minister Heather Humphreys to attend the debate tomorrow to outline what supports the government is intending to put in place to support employment opportunities in this region. The Border area has been left behind by Fine Gael and this trend cannot be allowed to continue. This government has a great track record on announcements and plans but fails to deliver. This must change and I will be holding the Minister to account tomorrow”.
