Sean Fleming TD has called on the Minister for the Environment, Community & Local Government Alan Kelly TD to provide funding for the upgrade of works that are required for the new Library at Main Street, Portlaoise.
Laois County Council purchased the Old Shaws Department Store for use as a new library but funding is required to upgrade the building and make it suitable for the thousands of people who will want to use this new library facility.
Deputy Fleming raised this matter with the Minister in the Dáil on 5th November 2014 and the Minister replied by saying that funding under the Libraries Capital Programme is fully committed to existing projects.
He went on to say that in the event of further funding being available the matter can be considered at that stage.
Deputy Fleming is calling on the Minister to ensure that there is adequate funding in the 2015 Libraries Capital Programme not just for existing projects, but also to so allow new projects including Portlaoise to proceed in 2015.
The new library in Lower Main Street will be an excellent new facility for everybody not just in Portlaoise but across the county and will also contribute to bringing more people back onto the Main Street in Portlaoise.
