Fianna Fáil TD for Donegal Charlie McConalogue has called on the Minister for the OPW, Kevin “Boxer” Moran to ensure that funding is delivered to address chronic flooding issues in Burnfoot.
Earlier today, a number of flood relief measures across Donegal were announced by the OPW, however Burnfoot was not included in any of funding plans.
Deputy McConalogue commented, “While welcoming the funding for Lifford, Downings & Kerrykeel, it is fair to say that the latest announcement from the OPW and Minister McHugh will come as a massive disappointment to the residents of Burnfoot who have been blighted by flooding over the last number of years.
“They had been assured that their situation would be given priority however the fact that works have not been included in this major funding announcement suggests otherwise.
“It’s unacceptable that Burnfoot would be excluded from funding plans, particularly given that many residents have been unable to return to their homes following last August’s floods as they are still waiting for flood relief works to be completed. Local businesses also need certainty that measures will be taken to protect them from repeat flooding events.
“I will be raising the matter in the Dáil at the earliest opportunity to ensure that the government and OPW provides the promised funding for flood relief works in Burnfoot area”, concluded Deputy McConalogue.
