Fianna Fáil Cllr Joe Flaherty has welcomed the news that Longford County Council are advancing his proposal for a container coffee shop to be located in the grounds of The Mall and Albert Reynolds Peace Park in Longford Town.

The project moves to the next stage following agreement at the recent board meeting of the Longford Pool Co Ltd, who manage the facility.

Cllr Flaherty asked council officials to examine the possibility of establishing a container coffee shop in the area back in February when he tabled a motion on the issue.

Cllr Flaherty said, “The Mall and the Albert Reynolds Peace Park is a fantastic amenity for the people of Longford and those visiting the area. However one thing that has been lacking is the absence of any sort of area serving refreshments.

“I raised this issue back in February with council officials and they agreed to examine my proposal for the creation of a container coffee shop. This proposal was taken on board and the officials who manage The Mall and Albert Reynolds Peace Park have now decided to progress the proposal to the next stage. Officials are now drawing up a detailed scope for the project and will then move to secure an operator for the coffee shop.

“The Mall and Albert Reynolds Peace Park are a fantastic amenity and have seen a surge in use due to fantastic initiatives such as the park run, triathlons and specialist camps. The development of a coffee shop will help enhance the overall visitor experience even further. There is great interest in the proposal and a number of potential operators have already expressed their interest in tendering for the project,” concluded Cllr Flaherty.
