As the Affordable Housing Bill is to be introduced to the Seanad on Monday May 17th 2021, Fianna Fáil Seanad Spokesperson on Housing Senator Mary Fitzpatrick is calling for cross party support of the Bill.
Senator Fitzpatrick commented, “The Affordable Housing Bill 2021 will ensure that affordability is put at the heart of the housing system and will underpin the new local authority led scheme of affordable homes for purchase, an Affordable Purchase Shared Equity Scheme (private lands) and the introduction of a new national Cost Rental scheme.
“This Government is committed to ensuring that affordable, quality housing solutions are available to everyone in Irish society. This bill is the most comprehensive affordable housing Bill in the history of the State, and I call on all parties who support affordable housing to vote for this Bill.”
Key elements of the Bill include:
• The first scheme of direct state built affordable homes in over a decade
• The first ever national scheme to provide for the delivery of Cost Rental housing
• A new Affordable Purchase Shared Equity scheme for homes in private developments
• Provision for the extension of Part V to a set 20% in every Local Authority area with a 10% minimum requirement for social homes and a further 10% requirement for affordable homes where required
