Responding to claims made by the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald this afternoon, Fianna Fáil Justice spokesperson Niall Collins said: “Rather than addressing the substantive issue on why debate in the Dáil was prevented on a Commission of Investigation Minister Fitzgerald herself was setting up she has decided to make false and misguided political accusations about Fianna Fáil. Deputy Pat Rabbitte has already conceded that he does not agree with the decision to stop the debate that was made by the Ceann Comhairle last week.
“Instead of taking on board the genuine concern about the ability to debate a motion in our national parliament Minister Fitzgerald has chosen to make loose comments to distract from the serious matters at hand. This government promised a democratic revolution but instead what they have delivered is an Oireachtas that is gagged and they have chosen to hide behind the cloak of the Ceann Comhairle’s office. Fianna fail is entitled to make our own observations on a decision that we believe was fundamentally flawed.”
