Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Public Expenditure Michael McGrath TD has welcomed the establishment of the Fiscal Advisory Council.
Deputy McGrath said: “The Fiscal Advisory Council committed to last autumn will be of huge benefit to the public debate on tax, spending and general economic issues facing the country in the years ahead.
“The role of the Council – to provide an assessment of, and comment publicly on, whether the Government is meeting its own stated budgetary targets and objectives – is appropriate in my view.
“There are also plans to legislate to allow the Council to assess the Government’s fiscal stance and macroeconomic projections as well as assessing the extent of compliance with the Government’s fiscal rules.”
“I want to commend Minister Noonan for his choice of personnel for the Council. The 5-member panel will bring a wealth of experience to their deliberations and I look forward to engaging with them.”
