Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Finance Michael McGrath has rubbished claims put forward by Minister Michael Noonan who said that Fine Gael are the “initiators of the recovery”.
Deputy McGrath said, “Any objective assessment of deficit reduction would confirm that the largest reduction occurred between 2008 and 2011 as a result of the previous Government actions over six budgets. Fine Gael voted against each one of those budgets even though they were more progressive than the budgets they subsequently implemented in office.
“Fine Gael cannot claim ‘ownership’ of the recovery considering they actually opposed all the corrective measures that were indispensable in restoring confidence in our country. Their Government has now benefited from these corrective measures. Fine Gael should cease their own back slapping and acknowledge the facts. The people can see through their self- congratulatory bluster,” said Deputy McGrath.
