Cork South West TD, Margaret Murphy O’Mahony has said that today’s comments by Deputy Jim Daly where he says that he favours the scrapping of the Free Travel Pass demonstrate the true nature of his Fine Gael party.

“The mask has finally slipped when it comes to Fine Gael and how the country treats the elderly and people with disabilities.

“Since its introduction by Fianna Fáil in the late 1960s, the Free Travel Pass has ensured that older citizens and people with disabilities remained able to travel around their community, and also around Ireland.

“This is a core social protection benefit for many people and enables those who rely on it to retain their independence, participate in their communities and it helps to prevent loneliness and isolation.

“Fianna Fáil will vigorously oppose any attempt to introduce a fee-based system.

“I am shocked, but not surprised, by Jim’s comments. Fine Gael TDs have been itching to get back to their right wing roots for some time, and this is the first attempt to claw back the progress that has made over the years.

“Deputy Daly is clearly flying a kite here on behalf of his organisation. Irrespective of why he’s doing it or who thinks it is a good idea, it will be opposed by Fianna Fáil.” concluded Murphy O’Mahony.
