Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon-Galway Eugene Murphy has called upon the Minister for Health to classify fibromyalgia as a disability.
Deputy Murphy commented, “The Minister must take serious action on this matter. People with fibromyalgia and their families have been campaigning to have their condition recognised as a disability.
“I have met with people from my constituency and members from the fibromyalgia community who advocated to us in Leinster House recently. They want this classification to reflect the unique and difficult conditions they live with daily.
“The Disability Act 2005, and fibromyalgia’s inclusion in this Act is vital. Fibromyalgia can leave people incapable of work, an inability to lead a normal social life. Severely affected patients may be unable to leave their homes, let alone maintain a job and financial independence.
“We must understand that many people suffer from this illness. The Minister must support this cause and give people with fibromyalgia the respect they are fighting for,” concluded Deputy Murphy.
