Fianna Fáil will restore the One Parent Family Payment – McAuliffe
Fianna Fáil General Election candidate in Dublin North West Cllr Paul McAuliffe said today that if Fianna Fáil is in Government they will restore the One Parent Family Payment.
Commenting on the issue Cllr McAuliffe said: “Fianna Fáil will restore the One Parent Family Payment to 12 years initially and then seek to extend it to 14 years. The current Government cut entitlement to this vital payment to when the youngest child is seven, placing huge financial hardship on one parent families. Furthermore, Minister Joan Burton had the gall to tell lone parents that this change would not come into effect until a ‘Scandinavian’ style childcare system was in place. The Scandinavian childcare system never materialised but she proceeded undeterred with the harsh and punitive cut.
“Fine Gael and Labour’s policies are based on the principle of protecting the wealthiest to the detriment of everyone else. As a consequence of their deliberate policy choices the rate of consistent poverty for lone parent households is 22%, while the rate of deprivation is almost 59%. This is this Minister Joan Burton’s legacy of her time as Social Protection Minister.
“Fianna Fáil is committed to creating a fairer society and we are the only party that can deliver this. We will support lone parents and their children, we will create a more equal society and we will deliver an Ireland in which all members of society feel the effects of an economic recovery, not just the privileged few,” added Cllr McAuliffe.
