Sligo – Leitrim Fianna Fáil Senator Marc Mac Sharry has welcomed the announcement by Minister Frances Fitzgerald that the Government is to setup an independent judicial inquiry to examine the circumstances leading to the death of Sgt. Michael Galvin at Ballyshannon Garda Station.

The announcement was made following a call for action by the Garda Representative Association, the Association of Garda Sergeants in Ireland and Fianna Fáil.

Speaking following the announcement Senator Mac Sharry commented, “I welcome the decision made by Minister Fitzgerald to establish an independent judicial inquiry to examine the circumstances surrounding this tragic death. This is something that I have called for along with the AGSI and GRA.

“It is paramount that the concerns of the Galvin family are fully addressed. The inquiry must be thorough and it is of utmost importance that the nature of the investigation carried out by GSOC is examined in depth.

“This is a very distressing time for Sgt. Galvin’s family and friends. He was widely recognised as an upstanding pillar of his community. People in Ballyshannon, Manorhamilton and Sligo are in mourning following his tragic death and they want answers as to how this tragedy occurred.”
