Fianna Fáil’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Brendan Smith TD has welcomed the Government’s decision to proceed with an application to have the case of the ‘Hooded Men’ revised by the European Court of Human Rights.

Deputy Smith commented, “When Fianna Fáil in Government first took this case to Europe, we did so because what happened to these men was simply unacceptable.

“While a full and accurate ruling by the ECHR was frustrated by misleading evidence provided to the court by the British Government, now that this fact has come to light our hope is that the men who suffered in this case might finally get a full acknowledgement of what happened to them.

“I would like to commend the work of the RTÉ Investigations Unit who have done so much work to get to the bottom of the issue and I welcome the Government’s decision to do the right thing and take this case forward to its most just conclusion.”
