Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has announced that Senator Mark Daly will represent the party in supporting Ibrahim Halawa during his trial which is set for October 4th in Egypt.
Today there was unanimous agreement at the Foreign Affairs Committee to dispatch a delegation from the Oireachtas to Egypt for Ibrahim’s trial.
Senator Mark Daly proposed the motion at the committee.
He commented: “I was very pleased to have the support of colleagues on the Foreign Affairs Committee today. This is a very serious matter and the Halawa family deserve the support of the Oireachtas at the trial next month.
“There has been good news today with the pardon of the so-called Al Jazeera 3, however we must continue to put pressure on the Egyptian government. The Australian and Canadian governments have led the way on this and there is a clear opportunity for the Taoiseach to intervene in this matter. Amnesty has said Ibrahim is innocent and a prisoner of conscience. The Government simply has not done enough to press the case for his release.
“I have been in regular contact with his family and I will be travelling with colleagues next month to observe the court proceedings. However I strongly believe the Government and the Taoiseach need to significantly engage in this matter and do as a matter of priority.”
