Fianna Fáil Senator Mary White has called on Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Francis Fitzgerald to find an urgent solution to the Russian adoption crisis.

Speaking on the Order of Business in Seanad Éireann today, Senator White stated: “The couples involved in this crisis very much appreciate Attorney General Máire Whelan’s commitment to a possible retrospective clause in an amendment, but we must also continue to highlight the emotional pain being endured by the families who remain in a state of extreme uncertainty.

“We have to urge the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Francis Fitzgerald to stay on top of the issue and find a resolution as soon as possible.

“Minister Fitzgerald has recently stated that the advice of the Attorney General has been sought and she understands that in principle it is possible to enact legislation which could retrospectively extend the period of validity to declarations.

“Minister Fitzgerald also stated that the Department of Children and Youth affairs in conjunction with the Office of the Attorney General is examining if it is possible to address this situation within the parameters of Irish law and the Constitution.

“This issue has been at the attention of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Francis Fitzgerald since as far back as July of this year.  These Russian babies and their potential parents future rests in her hands, she must find a resolution as soon as possible.”
