Fianna Fáil Councillor James Lawless has tonight been selected to contest the upcoming General Election on behalf of his party in the Kildare North constituency. The selection follows a convention at the Westgrove Hotel in Clane with more than 200 members in attendance. The convention was chaired by Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport Timmy Dooley TD.

Speaking following his selection, Cllr Lawless commented, “It is a great honour to be chosen to represent Fianna Fáil in the Kildare North constituency for the upcoming General Election. Fianna Fáil has a proud tradition in Kildare and I look forward to working with the organisation and wider community to regain a seat for the party in Kildare North.

“Families are continuing to struggle on a daily basis to make ends meet. The most vulnerable in our community have had to bear the brunt of this government’s regressive cutback agenda. At the same time the government is talking up an economic recovery that people are simply not experiencing in their own lives.

“Kildare North is a constituency that has been left behind by this government. Despite having 3 out of 4 government TDs the constituency is still falling behind the national average in terms of IDA and other infrastructural investment. There is also a chronic shortage of housing across the county which is heaping further pressure on struggling families. My top priority is to increase investment in Kildare in order to generate much needed jobs and to get housing projects underway so that families get the standard of accommodation they deserve. Transport projects must also be progressed so that business can continue to expand and commuters can access the capital with ease.

“The time has come for a fresh approach to politics in Kildare North. People feel betrayed as a result of the false promises made by the government at the last election and they have had enough of this sort of cynical politics. Fianna Fáil will not be making promises we cannot keep, and we will continue to put forward constructive alternative proposals to promote sustainable economic recovery and safeguard the most vulnerable in society.

Cllr Lawless also paid tribute to his competitor in tonight’s convention. He commented, “I would also like to pay tribute to Councillor Frank O’Rourke. I have had the pleasure of working with Frank on Kildare County Council over the last year and I recognise the important contribution that he is making in communities across the county. I look forward to working with Cllr O’Rourke and the rest of the Fianna Fáil organisation over the coming months. We will demonstrate here in Kildare North, and across the country, that Fianna Fáil is best placed to provide the alternative that people are looking for.”
