Fianna Fáil have selected Barry Andrews to represent the party in the Dublin constituency for the upcoming election to the European Parliament.

Following an energetic and very competitive campaign, delegates chose Barry Andrews at a convention in the city today.

Barry has represented the party in Dublin at both local and national level and now looks forward to the challenge or regaining a seat for Fianna Fáil in Dublin in May. He is steeped in a Fianna Fáil tradition and has served as a councillor, TD and Cabinet Minister. He is a former CEO of GOAL and most recently was Director General of the International Institute of European Affairs.

Speaking at the convention, Andrews commented, “I would like to thank the members of Fianna Fáil in Dublin city and county for the opportunity to represent the party in this critically important election. Dublin has been without a Fianna Fáil voice in Brussels and Strasbourg for too long. It is clear from the level of engagement in this selection process, the membership of the party are determined to fix that and I am very excited at the prospect of working with them.

“At such a crucial time for Europe and Ireland, with the impact of Brexit still largely unknown, a strong voice for Dublin is more important than ever.

Speaking following the convention, Party Leader Micheál Martin said, “Four formidable advocates for our party have put a huge effort into this selection process and I want to commend them all for what was a tough but respectful campaign. This process has energised the party in the capital and I am confident that we will be in a position to mount a very strong and credible bid for a seat in the European Parliament for Dublin.

“In Barry, we have a candidate who will represent our party and Dublin with distinction. I wish to congratulate him on his selection and I look forward to working with Barry in the months ahead, along with colleagues in the other two Euro constituencies to make sure that when the new European Parliament begins its work in July, it is doing so with a fresh team of excellent Fianna Fáil MEPS.”
