Fianna Fáil plan for €25million investment in Garda fleet welcome – McAuliffe
Fianna Fáil leader on Dublin City Council Paul McAuliffe has welcomed the party’s plans for Safer Communities which include an investment of €25million in the Garda fleet.
Speaking at the Safer Communities policy launch outside Leinster House today Cllr McAuliffe said the proposed multi annual vehicle investment would ensure the fleet was upgraded annually.
“This plan will ensure the fleet is upgraded and kept up to scratch to enable front line officers to react quickly and effectively.
“The current Government has undermined the Garda force to such an extent that Gardaí now pursue criminals in standard family salon cars. They use their own mobile phones and type statements on their own laptops. The force has decreased by over 2,500 members in the past five years.
“In my own constituency, which is covered by the Dublin Northern Division, burglaries are up 25% in the past two years while Garda numbers in the area are down over 18% for the same period.
“Under the Safer Communities proposal we will provide 3,433 new cars including 412 high powered cars. Fianna Fáil has a track record of supporting the Gardaí in Government. We have done it in the past and given the opportunity we will do it again.”
