Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has congratulated Bobby Aylward on being elected to the 31st Dáil in the Carlow-Kilkenny bye-election.
Deputy Martin commented: “This is a fantastic personal achievement for Bobby and his family and I want to sincerely congratulate him for all the hard work he has put in on the ground in recent weeks and months. It is extremely humbling to be elected to Dáil Éireann and I know Bobby will be an outstanding representative for his constituents.
“This victory sees a strong community leader taking a seat in Dáil Éireann to work hard to represent the people of Carlow-Kilkenny, to the fight for proper investment and to demand additional health services, education investment and job creation in the region. Bobby has proven himself to be in touch with the people on the ground in this constituency and his previous experience representing Carlow-Kilkenny at local and national level will make him a great asset to the Fianna Fáil team.
“I have travelled this constituency in recent weeks and met many people who are really hurting and feel let down by politics. The need for robust and constructive opposition has never been more evident with Fine Gael and Labour pursuing a deeply unfair agenda. We need a fresh approach and Fianna Fáil will lead the way in achieving this.
“I want to express my thanks for the tireless effort Deputy Barry Cowen has put into this bye-election campaign as Director of Elections. As well as being a key part of Fianna Fáil’s front bench, Barry has led a team of dedicated campaign staff and volunteers and has spent considerable time and effort on the ground in this constituency. This success would not have been possible without that support and direction”.
