Following today’s meeting of the Fianna Fáil Front Bench, Party Whip Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD commented, “Since 1962, the Fianna Fáil party has been the most consistent and positive voice making the case for a strong Ireland at the heart of Europe. It is the unanimous view of our Front Bench that we remain so.
“Since the beginning of the current crisis facing the entire European Union, Fianna Fáil has consistently called for a more coherent and more fundamental response from the institutions. We have continually made the case that encouraging growth needs to be central to Europe’s response to the crisis and that it must include a stimulus aimed at tackling unemployment.
“Alongside this, there is a need for member states to work towards balancing their budgets. This is a principle that was accepted long ago and supported again and again by the Fianna Fáil leadership, parliamentary party and membership in former treaties and referendums.
“On May 31st, the country is being asked to reassert our commitment to working towards a balanced budget by accepting the Stability Treaty. While we are clear in our view that the Treaty alone will not solve the crisis, it is an important step along the road back to economic recovery. We will be campaigning across the country to make this point and help deliver a ‘Yes’ vote. We call on all those advocating a ‘Yes’ vote to engage in a fact based, honest and respectful campaign.”
