Fianna Fáil Ballyfermot Representative Daithí de Róiste has hit out at those involved in the violent protest against Government ministers during a Children’s Rights Referendum event earlier today. The protest, led by former Sinn Féin councillor Louise Minihan saw a group of Eirigi protestors throw eggs and spit at a car carrying the Tánaiste and the Children’s Minister.
Daithí commented, “There should be no place for this type of political thuggery in our city. The fact that these people would choose to behave in this way at an event to promote a yes vote in the Childern’s Rights referendum says all we need to know about their values and their approach to politics.
“We saw this same instinct at work when Sinn Féin’s Aengus O’Snodaigh previously tried to storm Government Buildings and when Cllr Minihan threw paint at the former Health Minister. The leaked proposals on child benefit are wrong, but they must be resisted through democratic structures and by force of argument. This sort of political thuggery is wrong in all circumstances.”
