Cavan Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith and Meath Senator Thomas Byrne have pledged their support to workers at the Lagan Brick manufacturing plant in Kingscourt following the news that the plant on the Cavan-Meath border is closing immediately, with loss of 29 jobs.

Deputy Smith said: “The workers at Lagan Brick are justifiably angry about how they were informed of the news. It is unacceptable that they were not given proper notice of the loss of their jobs, particularly so close to Christmas. They are now being denied an appropriate redundancy package and are campaigning for the terms they deserve.”

Senator Byrne said: “I met today with some of the workers protesting at the Lagan Brick factory.  All these people want is to be treated fairly and be given what they are entitled to. I fully support their campaign.  There is genuine concern that machinery at the plant could be sold off and there will be no assets available to support the workers.

“These workers have been treated in an appalling manner to date and it is totally unacceptable.  To get the news so close to Christmas and be told that there will not be granted proper redundancy terms is devastating for them and their families.

“I am calling on the company to engage with the workers and their representatives over the next couple of days to ensure there is some peace of mind for the workers and their families this Christmas.”
