Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport, Tourism and Sport Marc MacSharry TD has welcomed the appointment of Paul Cooke as Executive Lead of the Football Association of Ireland on a temporary basis.
Deputy MacSharry said, “I see this appointment as a move in the right direction. Paul Cooke has a wealth of experience and is the right person for this role at this time. However, I believe the post needs to be filled on a permanent basis as a matter of urgency.
“I am calling for clarification on the reporting structure announced for the new Executive Lead, who will report to the chairman of the Board. I believe that in the interest of best practice he should be reporting to the Board as a whole.
“It is now vitally important that the FAI proceeds with the appointment of the independent directors and continues to implement the necessary reforms to ensure transparency, accountability and good governance so that we can once again have an association to be proud of.
“In parallel, Minister Ross must immediately identify an independent third party as a conduit to restore state funding of the football programmes and development officers in line with the commitment he made last Thursday”.
