“The women affected were promised by Government that they would be briefed before the report was published”, says Fianna Fáil’s Health Spokesperson, Stephen Donnelly TD.
“Put simply, every one of the women must now be told exactly when they will get the chance to be briefed by Dr Gabriel Scally in person.
“The Government must also begin the process of implementing his recommendations as quickly as possible.
Deputy Donnelly was reacting after meeting Dr Scally to discuss his detailed report and the work that must now follow to restore confidence in the smear test system.
“Public confidence in the Cervical Check system has been shaken. There’s no two ways about it. Dr. Scally’s suggestions on how to restore that trust are essential.
“The trust that thousands of women placed in the system has been breached. Moving to mandatory disclosure is now essential. Patients cannot be left in the dark ever again,” concluded Donnelly.
