Responding to the publication of the PAC Report on Templemore Fianna Fáil Justice and Equality Spokesperson, Jim O’Callaghan TD said:

“This report needs a swift and active response from the Minister for Justice and Equality. Minister Flanagan must appropriately address the findings concerning his own Department.

“The Committee’s report expresses grave concerns regarding the level of the Department of Justice’s oversight of An Garda Síochána, which allowed such significant financial and governance issues to develop in Templemore. The Minister needs to commence an immediate review of the oversight role played by his department in relation to An Garda Siochana.

“The Report is sceptical about the Department’s claim regarding a lack of awareness of the financial issues at the Garda College.
“This finding has the potential to undermine the Department’s request for additional resources from the Department of Expenditure and Reform in the forthcoming Budget.

“While the Gardaí must be free from political interference that is no reason for the Department to have no functioning role in respect of financial and governance issues.

“It is not enough for Minister Flanagan simply to state that he has ‘noted’ the publication of the report and that he will now see what actions are necessary and appropriate on foot of them. It is vital that he addresses the deficiencies in his own Department. We will be working to ensure that he does,” concluded Deputy O’Callaghan
