Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has congratulated Aengus O’Rourke following his selection as the Fianna Fáil candidate to contest the upcoming by-election in Longford Westmeath.
Deputy Martin commented: “This by-election takes place in tragic circumstances, following the death of Deputy Nicky McFadden, who served the constituency with dedication and distinction. It also takes place at an important time for many families across this constituency and across Ireland, as property tax doubles and the Government prepares to levy their new water tax.
“The truth is that far too many people simply cannot afford to pay for the increasing burden that is being imposed upon them and still maintain a decent quality of life. Key principles of fairness have been abandoned by this Government and they need to be sent a message that a change in direction is needed. By electing Aengus O’Rourke, the people of Longford Westmeath can send that message in a clear and compelling way.”
Longford Westmeath TD and Party Frontbench Spokesperson Deputy Robert Troy commented: “Fianna Fáil in this constituency have embraced the challenge of reform and renewal and we have played a positive role in communities across Longford and Westmeath. Cllr Aengus O’Rourke has been instrumental in this effort. Having worked closely alongside him for many years and in particular since I was elected as TD in 2011, I know that he will be a valuable addition to our team in Dáil Éireann and another strong advocate for this constituency.”
Cllr O’Rourke commented: “Despite the very sad circumstances of this by-election, I am honoured to have been chosen to represent the party. The speed with which this Government has become completely out of touch with the experiences of ordinary people has been shocking. The key philosophy of fairness, which informed budgets in this country for many years, has been thrown out the window and people are being hit with relentless taxes with no regard to their ability to pay. I want to play my part alongside Deputy Robert Troy in making this case on behalf of the people of Longford Westmeath, and look forward to meeting voters across the constituency between now and election day.”
