Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Brendan Smith TD has asked the Ceann Comhairle to facilitate a Dáil discussion on the assassination of former Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Boris Nemtsov.

Deputy Smith commented, “I was appalled to learn of the brutal murder of Boris Nemtsov last weekend. I send my condolences to his family, friends and the Russian people.

“Boris Nemstov was a prominent opposition politician in Russia and his RPR – PARNAS political party is a member of ALDE, the same political grouping that Fianna Fáil is affiliated to at a European level.

“Over the course of his life Mr Nemtsov worked tirelessly to speak up for the most marginalized in Russian society. He was a committed democrat who fought to strengthen the political institutions in Russia and he highlighted the scourge of corruption at every opportunity. In recent months he had also been an outspoken critic of the conflict in Ukraine.

“The despicable murder of Boris Nemstov just a stone’s throw from the Kremlin must be rapidly and transparently investigated. I have asked the Ceann Comhairle to facilitate a discussion in the Dáil on this matter to ensure that it achieves the attention that it deserves. Mr Nemstov made a lasting contribution to politics in Russia and his legacy must be remembered” said Deputy Smith.
