Fianna Fáil Leader, Micheál Martin TD, has welcomed the announcement that President Michael D Higgins will make the first state visit by an Irish President to Britain next April.

Deputy Martin commented: “This is a further step in the ever improving relationship between Ireland and Britain. It follows on from the hugely successful visit by Queen Elizabeth to Ireland in 2011.

“The Irish community in Britain will be delighted to welcome President Higgins on the first official state visit.

He concluded “This visit will provide many opportunities to promote Ireland and to further improve trade between our two countries.”
