Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has called for an immediate and interagency response to the news that leading pharma company GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) is to shed 94 staff at its county Cork base.
Deputy Martin commented, “The news that such a high profile employer is shedding 94 staff comes as a major body blow to this part of the country. GSK is a well respected employer, providing highly skilled and well paid positions.
“The 94 families affected by this terrible news will rightly expect that the response from Government is swift and co-ordinated. I am calling for an immediate interagency response, with a clear plan to see the people involved redeployed.
“Many of those working with GSK will have skill sets that are much in demand. It is important that every effort be made by the government agencies to ensure that these skills are matched with what opportunities exist as soon as possible.
“Unemployment is the single biggest challenge facing Ireland and should be the number one priority for everyone in public life. This news from GSK in Cork is a major setback and emphasises the need for a much greater effort to secure and create jobs across the country.”
