Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has paid tribute to Poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney following his sudden death.
“Today is a sad day for the country, as we lose one of our very best.
“Seamus Heaney was a giant of modern literature who achieved the highest accolades and honours across the globe. And yet, what struck anyone who had the privilege of meeting him was the extent to which he never lost his connection to, and love for, the people and places of his native County Derry.
“He knew his people, and he helped us understand ourselves better. He was a unifying figure, who gave voice to the changing dynamic on our island and the potential that exists. The fact that he is on the curriculum for school children on both parts of the island is a fitting tribute to the unique role and resonance he had.
“My sympathy and that of the entire Fianna Fáil family goes out to his wife Marie, his daughter Catherine Ann, sons Christopher and Michael and their entire family circle.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
