Fianna Fáil Leader and TD for Cork South Central Micheál Martin has paid tribute to former Tánaiste Peter Barry. He commented, “It was with deep sadness that I learned this afternoon of the death of Peter Barry.
“A distinguished Minister in a number of government departments including Transport and Education, he will of course be best remembered for his stewardship of the Department of Foreign Affairs and his role in negotiating the Anglo Irish Agreement.
“At a time of great violence and uncertainty, his role in helping to chart a way forward was critical and his contribution will stand the test of time.
“He was also a prominent member of the business community in Cork. Under his leadership he built a family business, which has employed generations of Cork people, into an iconic Irish brand. He was also an enthusiastic supporter of sport and the arts in Cork.
“Peter Barry’s patriotic commitment to his city and his country are unquestioned and he will be fondly remembered by both.
“On my own and my party’s behalf I offer his daughter Deirdre and his entire family circle our deepest sympathy. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
