The Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has extended his deepest sympathies to the family of former Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Martin J. O’Toole, who died last night at the age of 88.
Deputy Martin said, “It is with great sadness that I learned last night of the death of Martin J. O’Toole.
“Martin was one of life’s true gentlemen. He combined colour, wisdom and wit during his time in Leinster House and on Mayo County Council. He was strongly committed to his county and was a great advocate for rural development and for the farming community in particular.
“Martin J. had an exceptional record of public service spanning more than four decades. He was a Dáil Deputy from 1989 to 1992, a Senator on the Agricultural Panel from 1977 to 1989 and a long-standing member of Mayo County Council from 1955. He served as Chairman of the Council on several occasions and was President of Mayo County Council.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Martin’s sons Padraig, Austie, Martin and Séamus; his daughters, Marie, Anna, Breda and Gráinne and their families and friends at this difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
