Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has congratulated President Michael D Higgins on his state visit to Britain.
Speaking ahead of the ceiliúradh at the Albert Hall and the conclusion of the visit, Deputy Martin commented, “I know I speak on behalf of the entire Fianna Fáil organisation when I congratulate President Higgins and his wife on their very successful state visit to Britain.
“Like the rest of the Irish nation we have looked on over the course of this week as each new extraordinary image and symbol replaced the last. This visit is the culmination of two decades of hard work building the peace process and fashioning a new context between our countries. It has been handled with authority, sensitivity and style by the President, his staff and the team at the Department of Foreign Affairs.
“On many occasions I have pointed out that progress on the North cannot be taken for granted and that continued development requires renewed energy and determination. It is my fervent hope that this visit and the symbolism captured within it can provide fresh impetus and momentum to the peace process and the work of the Northern Executive.”
