Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Brendan Smith has strongly condemned the attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, which left a US Ambassador and three other embassy staff dead.
“This was a deplorable attack on the officials and citizens of the United States and it must be condemned in the strongest possible way,” said Deputy Smith.
“That a diplomatic building could be targeted in this way is shocking and shameful. The international community must stand strong and united against such appalling acts of violence. I have written to Catherine Ashton, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, to stress the need for a swift and unified response from Europe to these terrible events.
“My thoughts are with the families and colleagues of Ambassador Chris Stevens and the three other US Embassy staff who were killed in this attack. I have conveyed my sympathies and that of my Party to the US Ambassador to Ireland Dan Rooney.”
