Fianna Fáil is calling for fair treatment of the 30 workers at Assetco Managed Services in Buncrana, Co Donegal, following the news that they are being let go.
Local Deputy Charlie McConalogue has said the job losses have shocked the community and come as a major blow for the local economy.
“This is extremely upsetting news for the 30 staff and their families, particularly in the lead up to Christmas,” said Deputy McConalogue.
“The treatment of these workers over the past 24 hours has been simply unacceptable. They have essentially had the rug pulled from under them and were given an ultimatum regarding their redundancy package.  It is deeply unfair that this ultimatum would be issued unilaterally under an impossible timeframe and with no effort at consultation with the workers themselves.
“I welcome the intervention from the Jobs Minister Richard Bruton. These workers must be given every support possible from State employment agencies to ensure they get the terms they are entitled to and to help them find alternative employment,” Deputy McConalogue said.
Local Councillor Rena Donaghey met with the workers at Assetco in Buncrana this morning.
Speaking afterwards she said, “The staff have been put in an extremely difficult position as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of their jobs.  This news comes just 6 weeks before Christmas at a time when Donegal has the highest level of unemployment in the country.  All these people want is fair treatment and the terms they deserve.”
