Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Children Robert Troy TD has called on the Minister for Children James Reilly to immediately intervene to help 60 families left in limbo following the sudden closure of Arc Adoption agency.
“Arc Adoption was one of only two adoption agencies in the country and its closure was caused directly by the Department of Children’s decision to pull its funding,” pointed out Deputy Troy.
“The fact that the cut in funding was retrospective makes it even worse. This sudden closure leaves 60 families who had initiated inter-country adoptions in limbo which will cause great uncertainty and distress,” he added.
“The whole area of inter-country adoptions is very complex and bureaucratic with some cases dragging on for years. The withdrawal of funding to agencies like Arc Adoption is only going to cause more problems in the long term.
“The Minister and his Department need to act immediately to ensure no further delays for these families,” said Deputy Troy. “It is also up to the Adoption Authority to ensure that no families are delayed by this decision which is a direct consequence of the cut in Government funding.”
