Fianna Fáil TD for Waterford, Mary Butler TD has said that the bringing to cabinet of an independent report on the extension of the Waterford Airport runway is a positive step for the South East.
Deputy Butler was commenting after being updated on the position of an Ernst and Young (EY) report into the future of Waterford Airport.
“I am pleased that the submission from Waterford Airport, Waterford City and County Council and local private investors is included in the review by EY.
“Since services at the airport ended in 2016, it has become abundantly clear that an extension to the runway is crucial to any commercial future at the airport.
“Funding will be required from the State, local government, and private investors, but I believe that a positive response from the Government will spur on other interested parties, and ensure that the developments needed are delivered.
“I will be pressing the Minister to set out what his plans are for the airport. I understand that he has sought additional information from the airport and jet carriers on their proposals for the future.
“The next steps are crucial, and I will continue to be a champion for Waterford Airport and the South East region,” concluded Butler.
