Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Éamon Ó Cuív has called on Bord Gáis Energy to explore every possible alternative method of managing costs rather than hitting customers with substantial price hikes.
Deputy Ó Cuív said: “The news today that Bord Gáis customers are facing significant increases in their electricity and gas bills will be a cause of great concern to the tens of thousands of families who are already in arrears.
“Bord Gáis Energy did an excellent job of bringing greater competition to the electricity market with its ‘Big Switch’ campaign. I am now asking the company to do everything in their power to maintain these competitive prices and look at alternate methods to reduce costs. Perhaps there are ways of minimising the cost-base that could help avoid the need for substantial price increases.
“Customers of any energy supplier are always entitled to look at the market and see if other suppliers are offering better deals. Those worried about upcoming price hikes must be aware that they have the freedom to switch to other service providers.”
