Spokesperson on Children Robert Troy has welcomed the positive endorsement from the Archbishop of Dublin Dr. Diarmuid Martin of the wording of the proposed change to the Constitution in the forthcoming Children’s Referendum.
Deputy Troy said: “Today’s comments by Archbishop Martin are very positive and welcome. While he was speaking in a personal capacity he is a prominent and respected voice within the Church.
“It is clear that there is growing support to have specific rights for children recognised in the Constitution. While we recognise that this referendum alone is not the solution to all issues facing children it is an important component in ensure that the voice of children is heard. We know that there is much to be done to resource and staff services for children and will continue to raise these important issues.
“Fianna Fáil will undertake a nationwide campaign to explain the proposal being put before the people on November 10th. Further positive contributions in support of the campaign will be essential in turning out a strong ‘yes’ vote for the benefit of all children.”
