Fianna Fáil Deputy Leader and TD for Mayo Dara Calleary is urging families to check to see if they qualify for the Home Carer Tax Credit. He says many people are simply unaware that they may be eligible for the €1,500 per year credit.
Deputy Calleary explained, “The Home Carer Tax Credit is designed to help families where one parent works in the home to care for one or more children or a dependent person. Over the past number of years Fianna Fáil has been increasing pressure on the government to increase the credit and this year we were pleased to secure another €300 in the 2019 Budget.
“It has come to my attention that not everyone is aware of the credit and may be missing out. The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office reveal that there are 146,698 families across the country with one parent staying at home to care for children. Meanwhile, Department of Finance data shows that only 85,900 families claim the Home Carer Tax Credit. That’s at least almost 70,000 families who are not taking up the credit. And there could be thousands of other families missing out if a parent is caring for another dependent.
“People may not be applying for this credit because they are simply not aware of it. While I acknowledge that the Revenue Commissioners have done a lot of work in this area and there has been a significant uptake in the credit, more needs to be done to increase awareness.
“The Home Care Tax Credit is vital support for working families and we need to do all we can to make sure all those who qualify actually avail of it”, concluded Deputy Calleary.
