Fianna Fáil Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Councillor and Local Election candidate in Stillorgan, Donal Smith has said the plans proposed to expand the facilities of Dundrum South Dublin Athletics club should be backed by Minister Shane Ross.

Earlier this month, Dún Laoghaire – Rathdown County Council endorsed an application submitted by the club to the Department of Tourism, Transport and Sport in a bid to secure funding under the Large-Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) to develop track facilities.

Cllr Smith said, “Dundrum South Dublin Athletics club has over 1,000 members of all levels and has produced numerous Olympic athletes over the years, including six who competed in London in 2012.

“Those involved with the club have worked hard to push this project forward. It’s been on the agenda for years now and it’s been six years since a suitable 13-acre site was purchased.

“The purpose of the LSSIF is to promote greater active and social participation in sport and to that end, providing financial support to a club such as DSD AC to develop this site and improve its facilities would be especially worthwhile.

“The impressive design that has been proposed for the site will produce a state of the art athetltic track and multi sports facility that will be accessible to athletes from across the south city and county.

“I hope that a decision can be reached very soon on approving this funding so that development can get underway as soon as possible, “he concluded.
