Fianna Fáil Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher TD has said “the Minister for Health James Reilly has a number of questions to answer after hosting a media event to open a ‘new’ unit at Connolly Hospital, an incredible year and a half after it actually opened.”
“Minister Reilly invited the nation’s media to watch him open the ‘new’ Endoscopy Unit at Connolly Hospital in the Dublin West constituency yesterday, despite the fact that the facility has been operating since May 2010.
“The voters of Dublin West will not be fooled by this sort of cynical stunt-politics.  They know that this service has been playing a vital role in treating local patients since long before Minister Reilly arrived on the scene.  Presenting the development as a new investment, less than a week after its candidate was officially selected for the by-election on October 27th is an insult to voters’ intelligence.
“The Endoscopy Unit, at over 20,000 sq ft, is one of the largest endoscopy facilities in Ireland and is a fantastic addition to the hospital, delivered by Fianna Fáil in Government and during the late Brian Lenihan’s time serving the people of Dublin West.
“The unit comprises three endoscopy rooms, a 17-bed recovery unit, a state of the art endoscopy tracker system, laboratory, consultation rooms, relative’s room and a discharge lounge and library.
“I will be seeking information from the Minister in the Dáil about his media event at Connolly Hospital yesterday including details of when the Minister’s visit was planned and any and all costs incurred by the taxpayer as a result of the Minister’s official engagement.”
