Commenting on yesterday afternoon’s shooting in Drogheda, Co. Louth, Fianna Fáil’s Spokesperson on Justice, Jim O’Callaghan TD said, “It appears that this incident, which has left one man in his 30’s seriously injured, is linked to an ongoing feud in the town.

“It is hard to fathom how anyone could consciously carry out such a reckless attack at all, let alone in broad daylight, yards from a popular children’s toy store.

Unfortunately, this is not the first violent or gun related incident to occur in the Louth region as of late. It has been known for quite some time that there is a feud in Drogheda that is continuing to escalate.

“Despite tireless work, local Gardaí are left inadequately resourced to contain the feud and to protect the public. It’s the fact that this shooting was carried out so publicly and that passers-by, children or adults could have been wrongly caught up in it that is most worrying.

“It is imperative that the general public are guarded from crime and danger. The Garda overtime ban which was recently put in place in the district must be lifted in these extenuating circumstances especially as there is a strong prospect of retaliation. More Garda resources are required in Drogheda in order to meet the threat posed to the people of the Town by this ongoing feud.

He concluded, “At this stage I urge anyone with information to contact their local Garda Station or get to get in touch with Gardaí in Drogheda.”
